In recent years, with the advancement of AI technology, there has been conversations about what this will mean for certain jobs– whether AI will become advanced enough to replace certain ones or not. As a graphic design major, I hear a lot about the potential for AI to take over design jobs, but knowing what goes into being a designer, I disagree with this concept. Although AI has the potential to assist with design work, I don’t believe it will fully replace the need for graphic designers nor should it for the following reasons
1. AI lacks creativity
AI can only create designs from what it can find online, or what is given to it. This means AI does not possess the abilities to truly be creative, because it can’t create completely new ideas, it can only mash together what it finds from other sources. Therefore, human creativity will always overpower AI when it comes to developing new designs. It is also important to think about how overuse of AI could impact human creativity and why it is important not to utilize it all of the time. If people constantly use AI to generate ideas or designs, it will limit our capability to be creative. This will in turn make design and the world more boring.
2. AI lacks emotion
Another factor that humans have over AI, is our ability to have emotion. Emotion is necessary when developing designs, because it allows the designs to feel more human and genuine. Many people have negative responses to AI generated designs because they don’t feel authentic. So even in a situation where the same design could be created by AI as a real person, as soon as viewers know its AI it may change their perception of it in a negative way.
3. AI creates homogeneous design
The last reason why AI will not fully replace designers is because if every brand uses AI, all brands and designs will eventually develop a similar feel, making all designs somewhat homogenous. This is negative because the point of having a brand identity is to differentiate yourself from your competitors. To continue having unique creative designs, real people creating them are a must.
