Computers, smartphones, TVs- they’re all digital, but what does this even mean? I asked an AI generator to describe it to me and this is what it said:

“Digital signifies more than just the tools we use; it represents a mindset that embraces the endless possibilities of technology. In an era where communication happens in an instant, being digital is about leveraging advancements to enrich our lives. It involves crafting, sharing, and connecting in ways that were once beyond our reach. From immersive experiences in augmented reality to the convenience of interconnected devices, the digital world is a canvas for innovation and teamwork. So, what does it truly mean to be digital? It means engaging in a vibrant ecosystem where creativity flourishes and the future is crafted by our shared visions.”

Now this is quite inspiring, but I don’t think this is really what we’re looking for.

To put it in simple terms, being digital means that all of the signals used are in terms of 0s and 1s. Every function that your computer can do and every screen that you see is just a combination of 0s and 1s telling your computer what to do. If something is digital this means there are a finite number of possibilities that something can be- either a 0 or a 1. These 0s and 1s are then put together in different combinations to represent different letters, words, numbers, characters, etc.
